サマセット・モームが毎朝必ず机に向かい、何も書けないときはずっと自分の名前をタイプしていたというのは有名な話です。文豪ゲーテですら、大作主義を戒め、日々何かを書くように言います。
書き続ける中で自動書記のように書けるときそのデモーニッシュな働きをインスピレーションとかつては言いました。そのインスピレーションは身体を動かし続け、書き続ける中で育まれます。
だからこそ、モームは手を止めなかったのでしょう。

我々はつい頭の中で考えてからそれを表現しようとしますが、表現も思考も、行動の中にしかありません。数学者や物理学者はひたすら手を動かし、足を動かします。天才が散歩好きなのはそこに理由があるように思います。ジョブズも歩きまわりました。カントも毎日決まった時刻に散歩し、ゲーデルとアインシュタインは一緒に散歩することを好みました。京都の哲学の道も有名です。
